Our History
First Congregational Church was established more than 150 years ago by people who believed in ending slavery, promoting women in preaching, and making a positive impact through God's love. Originally known as Strangers Congregational Church during the Civil War, it offered refuge to strangers and those struggling with Protestant fundamentalism. In 1909, the church's name was changed to First Congregational. Over the years, we moved from the downtown area to Central Gardens and eventually settled in the Cooper-Young neighborhood in 2001.
