Reducing Food Waste and Feeding the Community
Every Sunday First Congo receives donations of surplus, slightly damaged, or near sell-by-date groceries from Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. These are the food items sitting on the back table after worship, and, of we don’t take them, they will end up in the compost or trash. While the number one goal of the Food Justice Ministry is to get food to those that most need it, rescuing perfectly good food from waste bins is also a top priority for us. After worship, please help yourself to the food on the back table and help us reduce food waste.
Community Lunches
Open Monday through Thursday 10 am - 12 pm CT
First Congregational Church's community lunch program goes beyond just providing a meal. We offer hope and connection to people in need. Volunteers prepare and serve nutritious food to those facing food insecurity due to homelessness, unemployment, underemployment, the loss of a provider, or severe illness. Established in 2012, the program relies on local support, including donations, volunteers, church members, and the Mid-South Food Bank. Our church is dedicated to serving people in need, particularly children.
Food Pantry
Every Wednesday, we offer essential food items, fresh produce, and personal care products free of charge through our pantry program. Our goal is to help people who are struggling with hunger and promote good health in our community.
